We are proud to announce the release of our first tee collection celebrating the fusion of fashion, art and history in collaboration with Bianca Paulus and Tarisai Tomu.
Today, Africa on My Sleeve unveils its first limited-run collaboration with Auckland based artist, Bianca Paulus and her unique visual representation of African Kings & Queens with a modern twist. Bianca’s work showcases a bright colourful pallet that captures the essence of the richness, fierceness and power of the Kings and Queens.
The purpose of the Kings & Queens Campaign is to raise awareness of African history and offer a different perspective on the continent’s past. The campaign is underpinned by a need to present an unbiased history of the African continent.
When they speak of African history the imagery we receive is of ‘masters’ whipping our ancestors. They continuously retell the story of the plight our ancestors made out of Africa as slaves. The focus is on how our ancestors were sold, abused and killed for many years. They also focus on stories of the ‘dark’ continent and present starving children and paint a picture of a place that is full of poverty, disease, death and famine.
They do all they can to suppress, distort and ignore the fact that we are heirs. Long before the slavery, colonialisation, poverty and death we were Kings and Queens of Kingdoms. Kingdoms that stretched far and wide; gold, silver and jewels that rivaled even the richest men of today.
Africa on My Sleeve has create a 16-piece collection inspired by the Kings and Queens of Africa in unique styles for men and women, all featuring the images from Bianca’s artwork.
Ten dollars from each sale will be dedicated to the Africa on My Sleeve 2014 project. Proceeds from the Kings & Queens campaign will directly impact Africa on My Sleeve’s efforts to create economic empowerment opportunities for designers inspired by Africa.
