Premiering for the first time to a New Zealand audience, Fela! The Concert is a colourful array and representation of the freedom fighter, political activist and musical genuis’ life. Fela! The Concert is based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway production and is a depiction of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afrobeat rhythms ignited a movement.
Commonly referred to as the Father of Afro-beats, Kuti pioneered his own unique style of music that combined funk, jazz, salsa, calypso and traditional Nigerian Yoruba music. In addition to pioneering this distinctive genre, Kuti’s lyrics established him as a political dissident who through music made political, social and cultural statements about greed and corruption.
To celebrate the musical styling of Fela, we are giving away a double pass to the opening night. All you have to do is show us your favourite song by the Father of Afrobeats. Upload your favourite song on your Facebook timeline and hashtag #aklfest #aomsart for your chance to win.
The winner will be announced on the 27th of February. Now go ahead and give us an earful of Fela or as he would say “Dem go hear wen!".
The Civic 19 – 22 March
*Please note the production below is a Broadway show. The New Zealand showcase will be a live band performing Fela's music.
