If you follow us on Instagram you would have noticed that for the last couple of weeks we have had a camera and new faces hanging out with us. We can finally reveal what we have been working on and my goodness it is some exciting stuff that we hope is going to be the beginning of facilitating conversation about African identity amongst the youth in New Zealand.

For the last couple of months we have been wondering what we can do to add empowerment to the work that we do. It was not enough for us to host events that bring people together but we had to do something that empowers the community and allows us to have a space where we can create our own narrative, showcase our creativity and pay homage to our heritage. When we sat down and started thinking about music and how powerful it is, shout to Fela for reminding us about the issues, we thought how about we host a workshop and use music as a tool for advocacy.

Working closely with Notable Pictures, we are proud to present 'Drums & Dialogue'. A workshop that will use music to inspire and channel advocacy for a more positive representation of Africa and its people. We want to invite you to come along share your experiences and stories with us, as we begin this journey to taking back our voice. Our favourite author Chinua Achebe said "If you don't like someone's story, write your own". We don't like the story they share about Africa so we are saying let's write our own and this is the first step in doing that.

The workshop will feature a panel of talented individuals who have taught drumming and dance in academic settings in the USA, Australia, Germany, The Islands of the Bahamas, and New Zealand; performed on stages with International acts and won awards for Arts festivals in New Zealand. As we say time will tell and we will reveal who these individuals are.

We are super excited and can't wait to have a conversation about who we are, we say power to the people and power to us. Register your interest here to be a part of history.

If you aren't following us on Instagram here are a few snapshots of our time with the team at Notable Pictures.
