Earlier this week Unchained XL released his first track of the year "Learn to shine" and when we say we are feeling some Fela/Afrobeats/Afrofunk vibes, we ain't playing! We caught up with Hugh and below is what he had to say about the track.
"Learn To Shine" is ultimately about hope. I was inspired by a friend of mine I met who at the time was living on the streets. It's about me wrestling with the fact that I wanted to change his life but I wasn't fully equipped to do so, yet there were important lessons that I learned from that experience that I can use to "shine" and make a difference in the world in my own way. I think we can likewise all learn from difficult experiences, as shine brightly. Musically, I incorporated some of the classic afrofunk melodies and timbres of artists like Fela Kuti and The Funkees. I wanted to get more touch with my roots and give people a taste of my culture - and hopefully compelling people to dance just as they did.
