Afrika on My Sleeve is a multi-platform online social enterprise that combines digital storytelling and content with third culture narratives, self-care as a form of resistance and empowerment.
Passionate about social enterprise in the creative industry and creating employment opportunities for those inspired by Africa, Makanaka (Maka) Tuwe is particularly interested in empowering and cultivating unheralded talent.
Recognising the need for a structure that ensures the development of creatives inspired by Africa, Makanaka founded Africa on My Sleeve in 2013.
Graduating with a Bachelor of Communication Studies (Public Relations), she has enjoyed putting the skills she obtained for community development projects. The projects she was involved in were underpinned by the goal of enhancing the African community experience in New Zealand and creating an increased knowledge of the continent’s culture. Projects include Miss Africa Auckland 2012, Rail side Charity Yard Sale, keynote speaker at ‘Celebrating the African women’ and speaker at EthnicA conference 2014.
When she is not researching the African creative industry, drinking tea and dancing, she is at an educational institute were she enjoys her role as Experiential Activity Coordinator.
With a strong interest in business management Terence Ngwerume’s vision for Africa on My Sleeve is to assist the designers with business development in a manner that enables them to perceive their business differently and as a valuable asset. After completing a double major in Accounting & Finance along with a Graduate Diploma in Commerce, Terence's interest in business development grew.
Having vast knowledge of the current business environment acquired from interacting with businesses and organisations from different industries, Terence’s focus is on the strategic business management of Africa on My Sleeve’s operations. As a quality-fabric and quality orientated men’s fashion lover, Terence oversees the quality control of all the products and services provided by Africa on My Sleeve. As an artistic mind with an eye for detail, he creatively analyses the execution of campaigns ensuring they are carefully curated to communicate brand values and stay ethically true to the mission of the organisation.
When he is not adding to his family of Saddle Back leather bags, brushing his shoe collection and bumping along to underground hip-hop he can be found number crunching in his role as Financial Auditor at one of the 'Big 4' accounting firms.
